VMDK Alignment
Following an excellent post at Vmetc.com talking about disk alignment where 3 options are given to align VMDKs
- Manually with diskpart or fdisk before adding data.
- NetApp’s ESX Host Utilities – mbrscan and mbralign
- Vizioncore’s vOptimizer Pro
Let me introduce a fourth option here:
- Migrate your template to Windows 2008/Vista or higher
Indeed, by default Windows 2008 will align its boot disk and any other disk to 1,024KB (a 2,048 sectors offset) to accomodate any storage vendor disk offset.

Thanks for the 4th option!
