VMDK Alignment

Following an excellent post at Vmetc.com talking about disk alignment where 3 options are given to align VMDKs

  • Manually with diskpart or fdisk before adding data.
  • NetApp’s ESX Host Utilities – mbrscan and mbralign
  • Vizioncore’s vOptimizer Pro

Let me introduce a fourth option here:

  • Migrate your template to Windows 2008/Vista or higher

Indeed, by default Windows 2008 will align its boot disk and any other disk to 1,024KB (a 2,048 sectors offset) to accomodate any storage vendor disk offset.
